Hi, How can I view a PocketPC point of view for a Mobile Web application in
VS.NET Beta 2? I installed the embedded visual tool and pocketPC 2002 SDK
already, but don't know how can view/browse with PocketPC 2002 emulator in
VS.NET. Can I do so?
Thanks,
Peter

Peter,

I believe that you might be getting confused with the client side and server
side development as well as what you can do for each with .Net Technologies.

Server Side Development:
========================
ASP.Net Mobile Controls which allow you to target multiple client devices
such as PDA's (PocketPC, Palm etc) as well as WML and cHTML devices such as
Mobile Phones.

For seeing how content you develop in various devices look, you can use
software emulators such as the Openwave Simulator, the Nokia Simulator, the
PocketPC Emulator that comes with the PocketPC 2002 SDK and the Microsoft
Mobile Explorer. As far as I know, the ONLY simulator that currently
integrates into VS.Net is the MS Mobile Explorer and that is a rather
generic HTML, WML and cHTML browser that is not device specific.

As far as I know, the PocketPC 2002 Emulator DOES NOT Integrate with VS.Net
(I am sure that more knowledgeable people on this list will correct me if I
am mistaken in this). You can use the included Emulator to browse the
content that you develop using VS.Net OUTSIDE of VS.Net, but I do not
believe that it is directly integrated into VS.Net.

This will change once Microsoft releases the Smart Device extensions for
VS.Net which will provide this ability. But it is not out in production
yet. (I will expand on this below.

Rich Client Development on the PocketPC Platform
================================================

This is currently accomplished using the eMbedded Visual Tools (eMbedded
Visual Basic 3.0 and eMbedded Visual C++ 3.0). This is a stand alone
development environment and DOES NOT Integrate with VS.Net. This topic is
also outside the purview of this list.

In the future, Microsoft will be releasing the production versions of the
Smart Device Extensions (SDE) for VS.Net and the accompanying Compact
Framework (There is an early beta out right now). The Compact Framework is
a version for the .Net Framework that runs on mobile devices. Using that and
the SDE will allow you develop Rich client applications running on Mobile
devices using the familiar .Net languages such as C# and VB.Net. You will
also be able to use the familiar .Net capabilities such as Web Services,
Windows Forms and ADO.Net. A part of this release will be a VS.Net
integrated PocketPC emulator.

Hope this clarifies your current options..

Anil

You can do that with a regular browser. The Pocket PC uses html. You need an
emulator for WAP devices, etc.
