I have been unable to get any .aspx file to run.
Relevant info:
    Windows XP Pro
    IIS 5.1 is installed and running (.asp files work)
    Visual Studio 7.0.946
    .Net Framework 1.0.3705
I have tried a sample I found on the web. I saw it work online. I can't
get it to run on my computer. The file loads into the browser, however
nothing is rendered on the page. I can read the source code of the
page.
This is true for several pages I have tried. Any help appreciated.

I bet you're missing your ISAPI application mappings in IIS. Run this:

C:\WINNT\Microsoft.NET\Framework\v1.0.3705\aspnet_regiis.exe -r

(For those reading the other thread on which I mentioned that, THIS is the
problem the coworker was having that we fixed with aspnet_regiis.)

If you installed IIS after you installed VS.NET it will not work. You will
have to:
1. Uninstall VS.NET
2. Setup IIS with all patches
3. ReInstall VS.NET

Been there done that!
