Has any wrote any code for handling Tabs beyond what is standard in the base portal. Like tabs that would run at a level off of a single tab. Like Hierarchical Tabs.

This is the one I'm working on... (it supports two levels - see the Who We Are tab)

http://d45723.u26.acomhosting.com

but I'm about to redo it because I like the idea of supporting 3 levels. Here is one I found with 3 levels which is great, in my opinion.

http://www.rkymtnrail.com

I'd love to get ahold of the code for that one (to save me some time and effort) but I have a feeling I'm on my own!

Well, the way I did it (and like I said, I'm changing it), was to add a new object called Menu... very similar to the Tab table. But I'm going to change it to just use the Tab table and have some sort of parent tab id. As far as the menu on the left, I just changed the repeat direction and the selected and item templates to display a little different.

I think the way to do the tree is to have a datalist as well, with the selected template also being a datalist (thats the menu, expanded).

Wish me luck... probably start working on it later this week!

Dennis:

I wrote awhile back and this is kind of an update. I am implementing a
Hierarchical Tab scheme that goes to three levels. At the moment I have
safely changed the portal to work on a two tab level scheme. I stopped there
to research best practices for navigation. I am basing my portal on the
findings of Jakob Nielson with his critique and appraisal for Amazon.com(I
also like Builder.com). I have also explored the very concept of portal and
what it might mean to the eventual end user. I envision flexibility with the
module/tab structure and understanding that every page should be a ascx.
page which is dynamically inserted into the DesktopDefault.aspx page. To
this end I believe that the construction and editing of the portal content
should really occur in the admin tab not on each individual page. This is
where I begin the implementation of my third tab level. First I will change
ModuleSettings.aspx to ModuleSettings.ascx.. This will allow the portal to
use this module like all other modules and insert it dynamically into the
admin page, it will of course be on a second level tab(Parent Tab=Admin) of
it's own called add module. Next I will add Second level tabs to the admin
tab called Edit Content, View Content and Link Content. I want to be able
change and view my changes before finally committing them to the live
portal. It is important to manage the content and find/access individual
content items from a centralized location like the admin tab. I should be
able to keep the original admin page on a second level home tab called
overview and include extra editing features on separate second level tabs.
This will include the ability to create and insert new portals to run off
the same database. Right now I have to manually insert new portals. I have
many more ideas about portal concepts particularly navigation and portal
intranet applications that I will be implementing over time. I'm hoping to
have my initial portal structure up and running and ready for view in a
month or so. I'm want to include a guest login to show off the admin site so
customers can get a feel without being able to make changes(Nothing better
than a live demo!). I want to sell the portal as a content manager initially
so I can fund my Intranet Application development. My first target customer
for my Intranet Application will be Property Managers and I'm hoping to
include KM capabilities as well as the standard form and report kind of
thing. I have not seen a product similar to what I plan to do. I have
actually built the database and it is huge. 100 tables. I probably went
overboard but there is a great deal of knowledge that must be stored in
persons head to manage several/many buildings. Naturally I want to beta test
with a few Property Management companies before I decide on the final
Intranet Application capabilities. Anyway nuff said, hopefully I'll post a
url in a month or so.

Dennis,

I've decided not to release my two level tab portal code. I'm currently developing a three level scenario and I notice that you are selling your code. I plan to do the same thing. So, I'd rather not send you my version and then see it for sale on your web site... sorry!

FYI... my three level version looks great! Just having some trouble with the bitmaps which are not transparent for some reason. Once I get my version of Fireworks (tried to do this with Paint) I'll fix up my button bitmaps and then I'll develop my own (company) web page and my code will be available for sale... could take until September before this happens since my kids are home for the summer and I'd rather play with them than with the computer... Also trying to figure out if I should incorporate or not... these things take time.

If you are interested in purchasing the three level version of the code from me when the time comes for me to release it, please let me know. I'll keep your name on file. Also, I'd be interested in knowing what people think I should charge for this.

Dennis between utilizing this future navigational feature and implementing
the multi portal site I think we could build a wonderful product for my
company. I have been brian storming a bit and I have some design ideas.
Once we finish the intranet site we can discuss this further.

By the way can you build the first Tab utilizing Diane's images for me? I
tried for several hours last night but I kept getting things mixed up. If
you just build one I think I can take it from there I just someone to help
me get started with it and then I can take it from there. Let me know what
you think.

So, I'd rather not send you my version and then see it for sale on your web
site... sorry!

I would not sell your code... and I do not sell my code on my site that is
done at asplliance.com/store.

I only sell what i invent and code up as modules for the I buyspy's portal.
I have just purchased from the store a two level version at
www.asplliance.com/store <http://www.asplliance.com/store>

Dennis,

I've decided not to release my two level tab portal code. I'm currently
developing a three level scenario and I notice that you are selling your
code. I plan to do the same thing. So, I'd rather not send you my version
and then see it for sale on your web site... sorry!

FYI... my three level version looks great! Just having some trouble with
the bitmaps which are not transparent for some reason. Once I get my
version of Fireworks (tried to do this with Paint) I'll fix up my button
bitmaps and then I'll develop my own (company) web page and my code will be
available for sale... could take until September before this happens since
my kids are home for the summer and I'd rather play with them than with the
computer... Also trying to figure out if I should incorporate or not...
these things take time.

If you are interested in purchasing the three level version of the code from
me when the time comes for me to release it, please let me know. I'll keep
your name on file. Also, I'd be interested in knowing what people think I
should charge for this.

Do not send the last email I posted to this list it was a mistake.
Thanks

Dennis between utilizing this future navigational feature and implementing
the multi portal site I think we could build a wonderful product for my
company. I have been brian storming a bit and I have some design ideas.
Once we finish the intranet site we can discuss this further.

By the way can you build the first Tab utilizing Diane's images for me? I
tried for several hours last night but I kept getting things mixed up. If
you just build one I think I can take it from there I just someone to help
me get started with it and then I can take it from there. Let me know what
you think.

Hi Dennis,

I'm sorry... I'm afraid I misunderstood what aspalliance was about... thought it was your web site since you often seemed to be pointing to things for sale there (which led me to believe you were making money from it).

I need to check out aspalliance a little more... haven't had alot of time to do much of anything this summer.

To anyone who is planning on selling 'your' version of the portal, whether you are making it 2 levels, 3 levels, whatever...

I also made my own version of the portal with the intent of learning .net with VB, however I am a designer by background.
My point is this.. No one wants to buy something that looks like crap, as good as it works. Let me know if anyone needs help with design, graphics, whatever. I just read a message about someone having designed their portal graphics in paint. Please do not go through all this troube and try to sell a great functioning application that looks like junk, it will not be easy.

The people who will buy this stuff aren't going to know photoshop or anything else, they just want something that will work and look impressive. Let me know if anyone is interested and we can work something out.

re: Paint

As far as Paint goes, I stated in my message that I intend to use Macromedia Fireworks to develop my graphics. I just used Paint in the interim to make a little node button. Once I get Fireworks, I'll make better graphics. So, it shouldn't look like "crap" or "junk". Kevin.. perhaps you should have read my original message a little more carefully instead of slinging insults.

I just want to clarify that my background is in User Interface Development. I have 15 years of Software Development experience and am at the Principal level and highly respected by my peers. I was known as a UI expert at my previous job. Granted, my background is in Windows (Visual C++), not Web but I think I have a pretty good handle on user interface design. I still have alot to learn as far as the graphics piece but I pride myself in my high quality work. Thats why it will probably be September before I'm ready to sell what I've done... I don't want to hack it together and I'm very busy with other aspects of my life (my children) to give this project my full attention.
