Hi there to you all
There are quite a few dozens bigs in VS.IDE... from CSS files not being
correctly rendered in design time, to strange behaviuor of some objects,
etc....
But recently I've come across the very worst of them all..
In the end of the day, a complete page lost its HTML contents. The only
thing that remained whas the Register Tag for the page. the ASPX contents
was gone... ASPX.VB however was fine. This happend only by pressing RUN!
One day work gone down the pipe. No one to blame because we make security
copies every day.
Fortunally I had a copy of the project on a diferent folder, and managed to
get the HTML contents from a file with 5 hours.
This is totally unaceptable. This is a major bug that causes a lot of
problems and cost us a lot of money. Tiday was one day work of one
developper, tomorrow it will be a days work of 5 developers. Or even 10.
This is not the first time this issues is addressed in newsgroups and in
mailing lists. Anyone knows if MS is planning on fixing this?!
I think that this may be because of system resources. The developper has a
258mb ram on his WS, and he told me that he had quite a few programs running
at that time.
Any info on this?
regards
João Cardoso

I had a series of posts (April 24 time frame) concerning approximately 10
bugs that I, and a many others, felt were not acceptable in a production
compiler/IDE. This bug was one of them.
We're still waiting for a response and/or fix from MS.

This is quite anoying. This is the worst MS IDE in the last 6 years. When
Interdev and VB6 IDE came out for the first time, they where rock solid. I
had the beta versions of those products and I coulnd find any major bugs
that could influence your daily work.
VS.NET beta had this bugs, and they where reported oiver and over in
microsoft newsgroups. Does not make any sense that months after the release
of the final version, there is still no word on an fix.
The bugs that I've being discovering in VS.NET ide when working with ASP.NET
are not only anoying but also a big security problem has I just cant trust
it. I need to make backup copies of my project every hour or so, if I dont
want to see, for somekind of magic, my day work gone. We are talking about a
great deal of money, and when working against the clock to have the project
ready, this could mean fail the schedule and loose a client... with all the
consequences that this means.
I'm not being histerical about this. Its reality, and allready happen twice.
Now, when working, I only have SQL Query analyser, and VS.NET open. I cant
take the risk of having anything else open, with 256mb of ram, or else, I
can loose my work.

João Cardoso

Does MS have an ETA of this and other issues (e.g., non-functional
Properties Tab after debug, endlessy looping MSI when opening a help item
from the Index Tab) ??
Can we expect an SP soon ??

Thanks Omar!
Please but a URGENT on that one! This is really a major problem and as a
team leader I'm being bombarded with "complaints". The developpers just
dont have confidence in the IDE...
Also about the CSS design time render.... its quite anoying... some times I
dont know if its me doing something wrong of the IDE with a bad mood.
About Paul D. Murphy original post, I thought of adding more RAM... but I
dont know to witch extend this will solve the issue. I saw a post a few
weeks ago in a newsgroup with a user with the same problem, with 512MB ...
Best regards and thanks for the reply.

Memory will help only because it will make switching between design and =
code view faster (it will not need to write to disk). 256 In my opinion =
(especially with XP) is not enough and slows me down considerably.
In the interim, when you switch to design view, make sure you let the =
IDE completely redraw before you move back to code view.
Since we have been conscious of this, we have not seen the issue.

A possible workaround......
I believe when we discussed this earlier, someone recommended that you
always wait for VS to render the design view of the page BEFORE you cha=
nge
to the HTML view of the page. They suspected that if the IDE did not g=
et
to complete the rendering of the design view, the underlying HTML could=
be
lost.
Since we starting being careful about letting it finish before switchin=
g
views, we have not had the "lost HTML" problem.
