I have been asked to create a simple desktop address book App for
reading data from a small MS Access database. As an ASP.net developer
this is a little new to me, but I don't think is beyond my development
skills.

Ignoring the actual size of the executable and database, what sort of
size should I expect the installation program to be?

I am slightly worried that the users are going to have to install the
whole of the .Net framework.

The application needs to work on WinNT and Win9x platforms.

Your feedback would be appreciated.

Cheers,

Your users will have to install the 21meg runtime file for your app to
work. You can include this with your deployment project.

Are you serious that we have to install the 21Mb runtime - surely there
must be a way to produce an installation with a smaller footprint.

It makes it totally impractical to distribute over the web when dealing
with home users who will balk at the download size.

Fraid so. There is no way to run win form apps without having the
framework installed.

That redist is one of the recommended updates on windows update now and
will be shipped with all future versions of os. But until its out there
people will have to install it.

I'm on 56k and a 20 meg file is only a couple of hours in an evening.
Took me longer to do all the critical and recommended updates on a new
installation of XP and that wasn't including the framework.

I guess if they really want to use your software then they will do the
download. With the popularity of cable these days its even easier. It's
even finally making an appearance in the UK.

Sorry to be the bearer
