We would like to have a "testing" virtual directory on our web server that
would contain a bunch of sub directories that would need to be completely
separate .NET applications. There may be multiple versions of the same
application in the sub directory. For example, assume "testing" is the
virtual directory, and "App1v1" is a sub directory under it. I'd like to
access it like this:

    http://myserver/Testing/App1v1
    http://myserver/Testing/App1v2
    http://myserver/Testing/App2v1
    http://myserver/Testing/App3v1

In ASP.NET, it seems like it isn't really a good idea to run multiple
"applications" under one virtual directory. Actually, it seems that in order
for something to be an application, it must be its own virtual directory
(the reason I say this is because in the past I've had to copy all my
application bin files to the top level directory that is mapped to the
virtual directory). Is that true? So in other words, I would have to make
each of the applications separate virtual directories and I could never
access them via the sub directory- eg http://myserver/testing/App1v1.
Another way of saying this would be: A virtual Directory = Application in
.NET.

Please let me know.

Thanks,
    Greg

Can't you leave Testing as it is, and create App1v1, App1v2, etc. each as an
application? That seems like it would work. I'm not sure how VS.NET would
like it, though it might like it just fine.

Pretty much the case yes, although you should really create an application
for each dir you want. I think VS.NET likes it that way and I think it's a
good idea in general anyway. Generally speaking, each VirtualDir = new .Net
application domain.
