Okay, so let me get this right...

You want to have a snipped to add to your site that can say something
like:

"Number of users online: 12"

If that is the case, the way I've seen this done (assuming you aren't
using a membership site where you know someone is logged on/off) is
using session_onstart.

Basically in when the session starts for the user, you increment a
global variable and when the session ends, you decrement it.

Application.Lock
Application("CurrentOnlineUsers") =3D Application("CurrentOnlineUsers") =
+
1
Application.UnLock

Now for my opinion ;-)
<rant>
Unless it is a membership site (and even if it isn't), why would I as a
visitor care about how many visitors are online? Unless it is a forum
group where I might want to see how many people are online that are
actively reading, why would a visitor care how many other visitors are
browsing a site? This is a pet peeve of mine...hit counters also. Why
would a visitor I care that I am visitor 2356893? As a web
administrator or an application administrator I would care about this
information, but think if Microsoft put on their site a "number of
online users" or "you are visitor number x" on their homepage...would
you care? This is what stats packages like LiveStats are for...to give
you a live snapshot of online visitors and total number of visitors for
a period.
</rant>

Collection in Application that is updated through Session_OnStart and Session_OnEnd? Easy way to hold state on who is logged in.

There are a multitude of ways to update states...Page_Load seems to be a decent choice.

I meant to add, not all of us always have sites where we can make use of
the stats features you mentioned. Some shared hosting environments do
not have them enabled.

dave wanta (VIP)
there are other reasons also.. Sometimes there are many other people
interested in your site, besides the users. For example, potential
advertisers, partners, magazines, authors, article writers may get an
instant feel for the success of your site. They may not frequent it very
often, and it may differentiate yourself from the 'wanna-be' sites. For
example, you may know that MS is a huge site, but say you are checking out
car parts, and want to purchase some accessories. Perhaps the first time you
are browsing the site, you see there are 30 people online, that might tell
you this is a popular site, and has good re-occurring traffic.

As an example, I recently added this to www.123aspx.com
go to the home page and you can see the #of people using the site, and I've
backed it up with actually showing their stats on
http://www.123aspx.com/whoison.aspx By currently viewing this page (Friday
night in the US), it tells me there are 22 other people online and have just
as little social life as I do. :-)

The code is pretty much what you see below, with the additional reverse DNS
lookup thrown in for good measure.

Cheers!
Dave

Understood,

However, if you are a site administrator and care about that info, but
don't have access to raw log files or other stats packages, then create
a site admin page that you can view all your custom coded stats on...no
need to make the home page more busy and distract from the business
objectives of the site

I meant to add, not all of us always have sites where we can make use of
the stats features you mentioned. Some shared hosting environments do
not have them enabled.

Okay, so let me get this right...

You want to have a snipped to add to your site that can say something
like:

"Number of users online: 12"

If that is the case, the way I've seen this done (assuming you aren't
using a membership site where you know someone is logged on/off) is
using session_onstart.

Basically in when the session starts for the user, you increment a
global variable and when the session ends, you decrement it.

Application.Lock
Application("CurrentOnlineUsers") =3D Application("CurrentOnlineUsers") =
+
1 Application.UnLock

Now for my opinion ;-)
<rant>
As a web
administrator or an application administrator I would care about this
information, but think if Microsoft put on their site a "number of
online users" or "you are visitor number x" on their homepage...would
you care? This is what stats packages like LiveStats are for...to give
you a live snapshot of online visitors and total number of visitors for
a period. </rant>

Are you asking, how many users are online in your application? answer
to this one is yes..

One I saw was how may active user in the last 20 minutes.

I am not particlarly choosie has to what is available on stats for
active users. I would take anyones idea as to what is a good
presentaion.

Dennis, give us an example of the stat you are looking for...

Are you asking, how many users are online in your application?

Well, session timeout being 20 minutes will usually mean you have fewer
users than their representation as active sessions. I've used client-side
code and cookies to record when users leave a site. The next time they
return, the server gets the exact time they left and compares it to the
timeout of their session on the server which is recorded to a db for this.

With this type of statistical analysis, you can get pretty close to the
number of actual users by how many sessions are active.

Without this type of research, how would you know?

Lets take this a step further...I have a site where I force people to =
login before giving them access to some of the members only pages. When =
they log in I can write to the database for tracking purposes of who is =
on. The problem is, I haven't found a way to write to the db at the end =
of the session to show they are gone from the site. Has anyone =
successfully done something like this?

there are other reasons also.. Sometimes there are many other people
interested in your site, besides the users. For example, potential
advertisers, partners, magazines, authors, article writers may get an
instant feel for the success of your site. They may not frequent it =
very
often, and it may differentiate yourself from the 'wanna-be' sites. For
example, you may know that MS is a huge site, but say you are checking =
out
car parts, and want to purchase some accessories. Perhaps the first time =
you
are browsing the site, you see there are 30 people online, that might =
tell
you this is a popular site, and has good re-occurring traffic.

As an example, I recently added this to www.123aspx.com
go to the home page and you can see the #of people using the site, and =
I've
backed it up with actually showing their stats on
http://www.123aspx.com/whoison.aspx By currently viewing this page =
(Friday
night in the US), it tells me there are 22 other people online and have =
just
as little social life as I do. :-)

The code is pretty much what you see below, with the additional reverse =
DNS
lookup thrown in for good measure.

Cheers!
Dave
