I recently purchased for a steal (in my opinion anyways) a multi-level tab
reconfig of the IBS.
Try snowcovered.com . I have it up and running on our intranet so I can't
really show you what it looks like but it adds a lot being able to expand
the content on the site by having sub-tabs.

Check out this three level tab scheme!
http://www.mgsc.org/DesktopDefault.aspx?tabid=19
There are several other enhancements at this site. One is that you can hide
the title of a module. Another is that only tabid is used... tabindex is
not necessary.
A site map is soon to come and will be displayed as a tree with all three
tab levels. In addition, the ability to MOVE a module from one tab to the
other will be implemented. This code will not be available until late
September.
Opinions would be greatly appreciated!

Check out this one that I am working on. See my previous message for
details. I find it funny that not may people try to break the "mold"
and try something new in the way of tab design.

I am working on one right now. I have the Hierarchy working with the
Parent-Child relationship. It will also display the child tab bar. I
am working on giving it some functionality like vertical or horizontal
choices as well as incorporating some DHTML for added look and feel.
should be done early next week. I haven't decided if I am going to sell
it or post it free yet.

I am using the menu from ASPNetMenu <
http://www.aspnetmenu.com/
> and
incorporated it into our client sites. I made minor tweaks to the
portal 'Tab' process, but basically it is just a parent-child
relationship that is recursive. One of our sites in production using the
multi-level menus is located at www.mifflinbroncos.com
<
http://www.mifflinbroncos.com/
> . You can build the menus on the fly or
create them using external XML. I also like its ability to use CSS.

Sure Jesse.
I will put something together to wrap it up 'nicely'. As for selling,
maybe a small fee will help cover the few hours of code development, but
remember you still need to purchase the ASPNetMenu
<

If there is additional interest from the group for this code snippet, I
will then make it available through the channels.
In the meantime, please email me

Richard,
Yes, this is a very nice product and produces some good results.
But I think the price is a tad high - compare what you get with - say -
the CrystalReports product.
I'm comparing the source code price of $799 for source code that is
still restricted (!) with the CrystalReports developer version - a
mature product that I can use time and again.
Best to spend a few happy nights working out the underlying technology
:-).
Duncan.

Hi Duncan,
Thanks for the reply and your point is well taken.
Please understand that I am not here to defend or endorse the ASPNetMenu
license agreement. You are exactly right that $799.00 is a lot of money
for source code (IMO) for a menu, but only if you just get source. Their
Source option is not just source; it is the source and three Server
licenses (3 @ $299: <
http://www.aspnetmenu.com/
pricing.aspx> read
more...). I see the source option as a way to protect your
investment/product similar to that of an escrow account, but you
actually own the code without having to wait for the company to stop
doing business. Not a bad idea having the source for protection. As for
the cost and restrictions, please refer to their website's Why Offer the
Source Code? <
http://www.aspnetmenu.com/
pricing.aspx> for any
explanation.
It is your call to purchase the source or not. I chose not to purchase
the source and purchased just the server license ($299) to use on my
production server for the unlimited websites option. The reason that I
have is that our portal product can be run from one server for unlimited
sites 'by design'. The folks at Cyberakt have been more that receptive
to discussing and explaining their licensing agreement and that is one
more reason I bought their product.
When looking for a menu product, I did not want to build one as there
were many good choices available (e.g. COALESYS). My choice just
happened to be ASPNetMenu at the time for my needs. I had no problem
paying for the server license as it saved me the time (testing and
design work) that would surely have 'cost' me way more to design than
$299. After all, isn't that why we buy controls? While I was developing
our portal code, Cyberakt released version 1.03. I see this as
cooperative development at its best.
I agree that to grow your own is more rewarding (time and dollars), but
my time is more valuable at this stage of product development. That is
why I chose to purchase the control. This particular control is one of
many controls that I have purchased over my career on many different
platforms and I intend on purchasing more where I see fit. I believe
the creators of 'good' controls are just an extension of my business
which translates into a better product for my customer. Isn't that what
Crystal is, a control. In disguise, isn't that what the IBuySpy portal
is? Just a tool to help get us going, a real jumpstart.
You may already know this, but when you look deeper into Crystal
Report's Distribution License Model you will see that it allows 5
concurrent users (included in VS.NET), which translates to about 50
casual users according to Crystal's tech support information. BTW-
Crystal is a product that I have used since version 2.0 (I know, I'm old
*smile*) and I use and love it very much at my clients. I actually have
Crystal Reports.NET Reports running inside the portal at
www.mifflinbroncos.com <
http://www.mifflinbroncos.com/
> for the
Reporting Module Tab behind some of those protected tabs that hidden by
the menu and portal security.
I apologize for being so long-winded; I'll come up for air now *smile*.
As always, I welcome and encourage any replies.

I let this one through but it is the last one. This discussion has
turned into a discussion about AspNetMenu and if it continues this way
then the discussion should be moved to [review-components]
(
http://aspfriends.com/aspfriends/review-components.asp
) where it will
be on topic.

Hi Duncan,
Thanks for the reply and your point is well taken.
Please understand that I am not here to defend or endorse the ASPNetMenu
license agreement. You are exactly right that $799.00 is a lot of money
for source code (IMO) for a menu, but only if you just get source. Their
Source option is not just source; it is the source and three Server
licenses (3 @ $299: read more...). I see the source option as a way to
protect your investment/product similar to that of an escrow account,
but you actually own the code without having to wait for the company to
stop doing business. Not a bad idea having the source for protection. As
for the cost and restrictions, please refer to their website's Why Offer
the Source Code? for any explanation.
I actually have
Crystal Reports.NET Reports running inside the portal at
www.mifflinbroncos.com for the Reporting Module Tab behind some of those
protected tabs that hidden by the menu and portal security.
I apologize for being so long-winded; I'll come up for air now *smile*.
As always, I welcome and encourage any replies.

Richard,
Yes, this is a very nice product and produces some good results.

Sure Jesse.
I will put something together to wrap it up 'nicely'. As for selling,
maybe a small fee will help cover the few hours of code development, but
remember you still need to purchase the ASPNetMenu package to make this
work.
If there is additional interest from the group for this code snippet, I
will then make it available through the channels.
In the meantime, please email me directly to discuss the possibility of
acquiring both the menu and our code snippet as we are an authorized
reseller of ASPNetMenu.
Thanks.

Thanks Alex, great catch.
To get back on track, I believe Jesse's original question was he was
looking for examples of portal menus.
My point in this 'Multi Level tab..' thread was to show that you can
replace the IBuySpy
DataList
menu with 'something of your choice',
homegrown or bought. I found using the datalist for menus was limited
for us (although it was a great start) and we just found a different way
to produce a menu. We were actually running out of real estate for our
menu items using the datalist. Multi-rows just didn't cut it.
Personally I have enjoyed seeing the examples that the group has posted
as it really shows us some great ideas and different ways in which menus
can be accomplished all using the same IBuySpy portal 'base' code.
I hope to see more examples posted of portals in this thread.
Thanks again,
Rick
