The problem is resolved.

Here are the details. We set up a completely new computer with a fresh install of Server 2003. Then all securith and service packs were installed all undeer the local Administrator account.

Following the MS best practices methodes the Administrator account name was changed. This action does not require a log-out or a restart.

Still loged in as the Administrator (remember the Administrator account name is now changed) an attempt to load the VS 2005 Beta 1 resulted in errors in the Windows Installer. In the MSDN KB article 315346 is information about the Windows Installer. A flash of understanding occured wihile reading the text although it does not specifically address the issue of changing the Administrator name.

Solution was simple, log off and log back on with the current Administrator name.

Best practice should be to perform a system restart following renamimg the local Administrator account. In this way all security descriptors will be current as well.
