I am writing a vb.net application that needs to connect to and call Oracle
stored procedures. My background is MS SQL so I am used to SQLClient / ODBC
/ OLE db etc, but new to Oracle.
In my simple way of thinking, I presume the 1.1 framework's managed
OracleClient library is all I need to make the connection. It seems that to
connect to Oracle I need the Oracle 8i Client s/w instaleld on my machine. I
have also heard that Oracle provide managed code as ODP.Net, but it's not
clear if this is for 8i.
Can anyone shed some light on what I should be using?

The ODP.NET won't work with anything less than 9i release 2, but the
System.Data.OracleClient works great. You will need to install the Oracle
Client software, I think the current release is 8.1.7.x.

Hi Glenn, many thanks for the reply.
I have the option of using 9.2, however for compatibility with an existing
system we have opted for 8i.
I did try the ORacleClient managed code, but seem to recall getting "Unable
to find
an entry point named OCIEnvCreate in DLL oci.dll"
Thanks for the advice and URL.

Could be a version issue. Which versions of the framework, MDAC, Oracle 8
client and System.Data.OracleClient have you got installed?
