Over the past week or so I have been reading two books on .NET My services
(codename Hailstorm), and here is my quick brief review of both of them,
then some speculation as to what other resources are out there on the
subject matter.
#########
Early Adopter HailStorm (.NET My Services).
~Dan Maharry, et al. (Who's Al ?) ;)
Wrox Press Limited.
Paperback - 1 October, 2001.
http://www.amazon.co.uk/exec/obidos/ASIN/186100608X/qid=1007307394/sr=1-2/re
f=sr_sp_re/026-1094279-3054019
This book not only gives a good overview of the .NET My services subject but
also has allot of background information as to the who, what, where, when
and why of the subject.
It lets the business people out there know why .NET My Services is a huge
opportunity at the same time as being targeted at developers with code
samples and introductions to the underlying technologies that do/will
support the technology (HSDL and XMI are explained).
This book is not the be all and end all of .NET My services and at the
moment none of the books out there are.
For now this book does a good job and lets people plan ahead.
#########
.NET My Services Specification
~Microsoft Press .
Microsoft Press International.
Paperback - 1 October, 2001.
http://www.amazon.co.uk/exec/obidos/ASIN/073561556X/qid=1007307394/sr=1-1/re
f=sr_sp_re/026-1094279-3054019
This book is not for people who want to know "What .NET My Services" is, its
a developers companion with about three quarters of the book being code and
syntax.
This book is currently only of any use to you if you are on the .NET My
Services Alpha program (
http://www.betaplace.com
).
The book is the Microsoft .NET My Services Developers Dictionary, with a
chapter devoted to the "what", "when" and "why" of the subject and the rest
devoted to "how".
I would not recommend this book to anyone who wants a background as to what
this is, but only those who want to start coding with .NET My Services.
#########
There is only one more book on the horizon that I can see and that's: -
NET: My Services Essentials
~J. Culbert
O'Reilly UK
Paperback - 28 February, 2002
Not sure what this will contain or if it will be targeted at developers or
architects or what but it's not due out for a long time yet so its pointless
speculating. Maybe someone from O'Reilly UK can fill us in?
#########
At the moment all you can do with .NET My Services is sign up for the Alpha
Program (
http://www.betaplace.com
), download the .NET My Services SDK -
Hailstorm in a box (HSIAB), and play around with the code.

I have the Microsoft book and as someone who is on the alpha I can say
it's pretty much a straight printout of the documentation that ships
with the first build of HSIAB. If you're not on the program and you want
to start writing code against the service fabric this book is the
closest thing you can get.
If you think you are going to be working with My Services then the most
important things you can do now are start learning the Xml classes in
the .NET framework. All of the .NET My Services services are addressed
through an XMI interface and all of the service documents are raw XML
documents. Knowing how to parse, pull, push, and manipulate Xml are
critical to programming this stuff.
I can't speak for the other two books, but given the very limited amount
of material that exists I would focus less on the service fabric and
more on understanding XMI, XML, XPath and WebServices in general.
