Hmmm....even after I "registered" I could not find where to download the
SDK. Also, it seems like you MUST have SQL 2000 running to play with My
Services? Do they not work on SQL 7.0?

The .NET Alerts Service is a confusing one, because it is one of the
services that has a legacy component to it. There are two different
Alert services from Microsoft being worked on now. One is the beta
version of the .NET Alerts SDK. I think this is an enhancement to the
current Alerts functionality used on EBAY, MSN and other Microsoft
properties. This beta is available at www.betaplace.com via a user name
and password. All attendees of the PDC were given a user name and
password. If you did not attend the PDC, I am sure there are other ways
to be enrolled on the beta; however, I am not familiar with them. This
should go into production in mid 2002. Implementing this service with
Passport is a good way to get a .NET My Services head start, because the
implementation is supposed to have some similarities.
The other Alert Service is the .NET My Alerts service, which will be
distributed with .NET My Services. This will obviously be more
integrated with the .NET My Services because it will be an internal
service. .NET My Services are schedule for a beta release in mid 2002
and for a production release at the end of 2002. I think Microsoft plans
on eliminating the stand-a-lone alert service sometime after the final
release of .NET My Services.
There is also a SQL Service Notification server being worked on by
Microsoft that is compatible with the .NET Alerts SDK that handles
broadcasting and other items to make it scalable. This was demonstrated
at the PDC. This is what MSN will use for their broadcasts.
This is my best understanding of Alerts. If anyone knows more or has
corrections, please post them.
