Tim,

My suggestion would be to use the OnItemCreated event to examine each
item created in the DataGrid. Inside the OnItemCreated event you can
check the DataGridItemEventArgs to see if it's ItemType is equal to
ListItemType.Pager. Once you have identified you are on the correct row,
you will probably have to reference the correct column (cell) so you can
do something like this.....

Dim myTableCell As TableCell

'Where 0 is the column containing your LinkButton
'You may have to adjust this for your page
myTableCell = e.Item.Cells(0)

Dim myPagerLink As LinkButton
myPagerLink = myTableCell.Controls(0)
myPagerLink.Style.Add("background-color","#CCCCCC")

Now, the tricky part is figuring out how to locate the appropriate
LinkButton. You will notice that in the code above I have referenced the
first cell (0) in the table and the first control (0) in that cell. You
will definitely have something different. The best way to figure out
where the controls are in the table (or Page for that matter) is to look
at the control tree. How do I look at the control tree you might be
asking.....well, you will need to turn on tracing. Tracing can be turned
on at the page level by setting the Trace attribute of the Page
directive. Something like this....

<%@ Page Trace="true" %>

Hi Alex,

Yes I have had a look at the DataGridPagerStyle class, but there doesn't
seem to be a way of setting just the link properties as opposed to the
whole page number panel.

The effect I am trying to achieve is to set a background colour +
borders for each link so each page number has a small box around it. But
so far the only possibility I can think of is attaching css classnames
to and I'm not even sure if I could get that to work.

Thanks

Hi Alex,

Got my custom page links working, thanks for your help. There is only ever
one cell in the pager panel as far as I can tell.

The controls for the pager consist of some literal controls for spacing
( ), a label control for the current page and the rest are your page
number linkbuttons

private void dgGroups_OnItemCreated(object source,

System.Web.UI.WebControls.DataGridItemEventArgs e)

{

if(e.Item.ItemType.ToString() == "Pager")

{

//Select the pager cell and iterate controls

TableCell pagerCell = e.Item.Cells[0];

foreach(object item in pagerCell.Controls)

{

if (item.GetType().Name == "DataGridLinkButton")

{

LinkButton pageButton = (LinkButton)item;

//Set your linkbutton style

pageButton.BorderColor = System.Drawing.Color.Black;

pageButton.BorderWidth = 1;

}

if (item.GetType().Name == "Label")

{

Label currentPage = (Label)item;

//Set current page label style

currentPage.BorderColor = System.Drawing.Color.Black;

currentPage.BorderWidth = 1;

}

}

}

Thanks

Scott.

Hi ppl..

Thx for the responses I got on my last DataGrid prob.

Now I have another.
I am trying to enable paging but getting the following error.

[HttpException (0x80004005): AllowCustomPaging must be true and VirtualItemCount must be set for a DataGrid with ID gridCancelledChallenges when AllowPaging is set to true and the selected datasource does not implement ICollection.]
System.Web.UI.WebControls.DataGrid.CreateControlHierarchy(Boolean useDataSource) +2063
System.Web.UI.WebControls.BaseDataList.OnDataBinding(EventArgs e) +49
System.Web.UI.WebControls.BaseDataList.DataBind() +23
ladder.de.admin.Cdefault.BindChallenges() +476
ladder.de.admin.Cdefault.Page_Load(Object sender, EventArgs e) +288
System.Web.UI.Control.OnLoad(EventArgs e) +67
System.Web.UI.Control.LoadRecursive() +29
System.Web.UI.Page.ProcessRequestMain() +724

I want to enable paging with page numbers on the bottom of the grid. The grids datasource is set to a SQLDataReader.
The examples I have seen do not use SQLDataReader but rather methods that implement the datasource as an ICollection.

Can someone help me out here pls.

TIA
Mike

Mike,

Paging with the DataReader is not supported out of the box. If you want
out of the box paging then you need ot use the DataSet as your
DataSource. Steve Smith posted some code to do custom paging with a
DataReader a while back I believe. Steve, can you repost some or all of
that code to this list (I can't find it in the archives)?

Hi all,

Got a datagrid, bound to a dataset.

Problem is that the paging links at the bottom display the first page no
matter which page I choose.

The datagrid is being databound when I add an item (separate
subroutine), and when I delete an item. I even tried adding the
databinding code in the page load depending on whether the datagrid was
being displayed or not.

Is there any place where I can get hold of the actual code being
executed when you select a different page? I see the handler javascript
call is structured the same way as the standard button columns.

Any ideas....?

On a side note. Anyone else ever had a problem with trying to change
the Visible property of a control (same datagrid), but it defaults to
False all the time - end up having to change it in HTML view.

Cheers

Did you add the event handler for the
OnPageIndexChanged event? If not, the paging will not
work. For some reason they didn't make paging "point
and click" from the designer, you have to add the code
for the event handler. I have another post concerning
problems with the paging.

Got it.

Thanks.

Now I must just look at handling what happens if you delete enough
records so that the current page index becomes invalid.

I reproduced your problem, and I found that if I fill the dataset before
setting the currentpageindex to the newpageindex, and then do the
databind afterwards, it works fine.

Not 100% sure why.

I just did the same thing and it worked for me. Now
I'm not going to do it if I have to make a trip to the
server with each page change. Geez, I thought the
dataset was supposed to be a disconnected set to work
from.
They really praise this datagrid tool, but it has been
the least helpful in my work.

Thanks for the help.

Jon,

    By disconnected, they don't mean "disconnected from the server"; that would
involve either a client-side applet or a WHOLE lot of client scripting
guaranteed to work in every browser known to man. Rather a limiting
approach to take...
    Instead, what it means is that you can work with the DataSet without an
open database connection. This is very useful in terms of performance.
    Additionally, you can cache DataSets in memory so that for subsequent
paging trips, there is very little processing time at the server.

Cheers,

Peter

If your dataset is not to larger store in the session and then you do not
have to requery each time.

The dataset is cached so there is much less process overhead on the server
making paging request responses quicker.
